Alabama Notebook: Bama banged up after win over FIU
Associated Press
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --
Alabama receiver Julio Jones and tailback Roy Upchurch
attended practice Monday but were held out with injuries.
Far worse was the situation facing defensive end Damion
Square.
As feared initially, an MRI confirmed that Square tore the
ACL in his knee during the fourth quarter of Saturday's
victory over Florida International. He will have surgery
today, ending the redshirt freshman's 2009 season after two
games.
"It's really too bad," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "He
was redshirted last year, was a promising freshman and
really played well in the game. We were hopeful he would
give us great depth, but this will give somebody else an
opportunity."
Saban said Jones suffered "no significant damage" in his
right kneecap beyond the bruise sustained when he was hit
against FIU. Nevertheless, Jones was held out of practice in
a black, no-contact jersey Monday for what's thought to be
the first time in his UA career.
"There is no way to determine how long this is going to
take," Saban said of Jones. "But it shouldn't take more than
a few days."
